One person can build a small cabin and it has been done more times than I can keep count of.

Yes all land in the US is subject to taxes and some are even subject to home or land owners association dues.

The reason that people choose desert type spots for their homesteads is due to the climate, dry arid places in the day turn frigidly cold at night, also this weather pattern offers torrential rain, so rain water harvesting is possible, and lets not forget the abundance of solar and wind power waiting to be collected, the land itself is viewed as not too desirable by the multitude of people in the US as most places have no options for city power or water so it sells pretty cheaply.

As for the 5 bedroom home I would seriously consider downsizing to building only what you needed to live in as the rest is a waste of space, not to mention heating and cooling issues, dependent upon the type of home you decide to build will greatly impact your living comfortable and at one with the area you pick.

Ask as many questions as you like I will be happy to answer them all.

Many of use here already have our homesteads going and have our own websites dedicated to them, if you would like mine is www.offgridhomesteading.com and you are welcome to join. I believe KatLupe also has her own.

I wish you well on your research and as said before just ask and we will do all we can to help.

i dont plan on building in ny because of the weather but i do plan on relocating to a place with warmer weather i saw this show on tv i forget the name but it showed this guy living in california a couple miles in to the desert (i dont plan on living in the desert) but he had a nice ranch but the point of this is i was wondering if they had to pay for the land and if so what abot taxes? how many people help your family in the building of it? you think one person can build a decent cabin about 5 rooms i would say?

you said there wasnt alot of sun have you tried the windmill it should be windy in the forest and the gaurden i have no idea but if you have alot of time on your hads you could build a green house and use uv light for certain vegatables

thanks for the advice ill be doing some research on it have a nice day

I didn't mean you had to live in NY. You can choose anywhere you want and CA is a good choice for using solar. I would think land there though would be very expensive. I choose NY because it is my home state, my family is here and nothing compares, in my opinion, to the beautiful old forests of the northeast. We traveled the whole country and thought we'd like to live out west and I also grew up in FL. So I made a choice by researching.

To answer your questions, yes, you must purchase the land and pay taxes on it. Some states have lower taxes than others and you can make a choice based on that if it is important to you.

We plan on adding a wind turbine in the future, but other things are more important at the moment. We have been adding quality components and parts as money allows. Don't want to rush through it and not have it set up correctly for us. All things in time. We don't see living off the grid as a hardship of any sort. Love it!

Good luck!

I saw your post and know exactly how you feel. Finding a place can seem like a daunting task, but it does not have to be. I have chronicled my journey and I think you might find it useful.

Does concern me that if one spends more than 10 minutes composing reply to topic and then it dumped as "replies only by registered users".
